This has been reported in bbc.com dated 21 July 2015.
Apart from the 11 cubs, forest officials of Gujarat’s Gir sanctuary have spotted four pregnant lionesses – therefore, more Asiatic lion cubs could be on their way.
These lions were once widespread in Gujarat, but their numbers dwindled to a mere dozen in the early 20th Century, mainly due to hunting and drought. However, thanks to a ban on lion hunting and several preservation measures, their numbers have increased.
Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel had said in May-2015 that the lion population had risen from 411 in 2010 to 523 in 2015.
