Elderly people benefit from green surroundings and from water bodies

A research has shown that elderly people can benefit from being amidst greenery and around running or still water – such surroundings help the aging adults. The research was carried out in Vancouver and the researchers interviewed adults aged 65 to 86 years who lived there. All the participants in the study were considered coming from low-income and eight different self-identified racial and ethnic groups.
This has been reported in zeenews.india.com dated 11 July 2015.
It is known that natural environments promote physical, mental, and spiritual healing and, the study has found that incorporating small features like a koi pond or a bench with a view of flowers has benefits. Public health and urban development strategies can make use of nature to optimize health resource for older adults.
Small things like listening to the sound of water or a bee buzzing among flowers, can have a tremendous impact on overall health of the elderly persons.
Such natural surroundings also provide venues to hold multi-generational social interactions and engagement. These could include planned activities with friends and families, and impromptu gatherings with neighbors.
