This has been reported in zeenews.india.com dated 7 July 2015.
Mohammad Imran, the captain of Pakistan’s hockey team has put the blame on eating ‘chana dal’ and ‘khajoor’ – he has said that the government had ignored the national sport and that one should not expect big performances from players who are on a diet of "chana daal and khajoor".
He minced no words while interacting with the media in Lahore after their return from Brussels. In his words - the players now had no motivation to do well.
"Hum Rooh Afza aur Khajooro par, naan channay khaa kar world champions nahi ban saktay" is how he put it. This was a clear reference to the problems that the players have been facing in the recent past due to the financial crisis in the Pakistan Hockey Federation.
The captain has also revealed that many players were forced to go and play in foreign leagues to earn good money. He has also added that if hockey is to survive in Pakistan than players should be able to make a career in hockey and play with a peace of mind and not worry about daily allowances, contract payments or meals.
