Harassed by teachers, four trainee athletes of SAI in Thiruvananthapuram attempt suicide, one dies

Four girls, trainee athletes of SAI Thiruvananthapuram, attempted suicide by consuming a poisonous fruit known locally as ‘othalanga’ – one of the girls has died and the remaining three are in serious condition in hospital. This has been reported in zeenews.india.com dated 8 May 2015.
It seems the girls were undergoing training at the Water Sports Centre of the SAI at nearby Punnamada and harassment by the trainers forced them to take the extreme step. They have left behind a joint suicide note and the police is investigating. The statement of one of the girls, who is able to speak, has been taken.
One of the girls had won a gold medal in kayak event during the National Games, which took place this year.
The allegation of relatives of the girls about physical and mental torturing by some seniors has been denied by the hostel warden.
Angry relatives of the girl who died wants an immediate inquiry into the incident. They have also threatened to block the national highway and not perform the last rites of their ward unless the guilty is brought to book.
