Nine out of 10 persons in India do not know that they are diabetic

#diabetes #bloodsugar #InternationalDiabetesFederation #health This may come as a shock to many but a survey conducted by the Association of Physicians of India (API) in eight Indian cities Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad and Pune has revealed that 90% of people with diabetes are under the impression that their blood sugar is under control even though it is not so.
This has been reported in timesofindia.indiatimes.com dated 12 February 2015.
The survey involved 1,500 adults who had diabetes, 302 caregivers and 60 doctors.
API president Dr Shashank Joshi has said that the World Health Organization last year had indicated that sugar is the new tobacco. While tobacco causes cancer, sugar leads to diabetes and should be taken seriously.
Incidentally, the International Diabetes Federation puts the number of patients with diabetes in India at 65.1 million (it was 50.8 million in 2010) and feel that the number could go beyond 100 million by 2030.
Some indications of diabetes are excessive thirst, increased urination, fatigue, loss of weight, blurred vision, wounds that do not heal quickly, frequent infections, tingling of feet and hands, and swollen gums.
