It seems curcumin, a bright-yellow compound, is found in the root of the Indian spice turmeric and it helps to prevent new fear memories from getting stored in the brain. It also has the dual function of doing away with pre-existing fear memories.
Researchers hope that these findings will help to develop treatments for people who are suffering with psychological disorders.
The experiments were conducted on rats. The psychologists had trained the rats to become scared when they heard a particular sound. Scientists interpreted that the rodents were frightened when they froze. The scientists observed that when the same sound was played after a lapse of time, the rats that had been given ordinary food froze. However, the rats that were fed the curcumin-rich diet did not freeze – the presumption was that the fearful memories had been erased.
The study was carried out by Professor Glenn Schafe and, in his opinion, a curcumin-enriched diet would be great help to people who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder and other psychological disorders like Alzheimer’s that are characterized by fearful memories.
