The treasure trove was purportedly hidden somewhere in the Rocky Mountains by eccentric millionaire 85-year-old Forrest Fenn. He was an art dealer dubbed a real-life Indiana Jones and he gave out to the public only a handful of cryptic clues as to the treasure's whereabouts.
The treasure hunter had moved from Atlanta, Georgia to Colorado two years ago after he caught the Fenn fortune fever. He bought himself a raft to explore the region's rivers and, a week after he set off on his journey, his loved ones lost contact with him. Subsequently, his dog and raft were found and his remains turned up after another six months.
Incidentally, Forrest Fenn was a former military pilot and an archeology enthusiast and he made his fortune in art dealing. When he was diagnosed with cancer, he decided to give back all his fortune to society and hit upon the plan of treasure hunt. His treasure reportedly consists of 19kg of riches that includes 265 gold coins that were "mostly American eagles and double eagles." There was also "hundreds of gold nuggets, some as large as chicken eggs, ancient Chinese carved jade figures, pre-Columbian gold animal artefacts, lots of rubies, emeralds, sapphires and diamonds, and other things".
