Death toll in Uttarakhand cloudburst rises to 18


With the recovery of three more bodies from the debris in the cloudburst-hit villages of Pithoragarh, the death toll in rain-related incidents in the state rose to 18 while searches continues by the Army for many missing people. The Army is assisted by paramilitary and police personnel.

The Disaster Mitigation Centre in Dehra Dun have confirmed finding three more bodies from Bastadi and Nauleda villages of Pithoragarh district -thus the toll from cloudburst in the wee hours of Friday has gone up to to 15. The number of recovered bodies swept away by flashfloods in Chamoli continues to be 3 and the total fatalities from both districts stands at 18.
The rescue and search operations were hampered by the weather with intermittent rains lashing most parts of the state, Army, para-military and police personnel continued their rescue and search operations in the affected areas. NDRF, SDRF, ITBP and the state police are working round-the-clock to search for any traces of life trapped under the debris.
