Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary in Tripura sees three new lion cubs

For the first time in 30 years, the Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary of Tripura has created history. The park which had, subsequently, been converted into a sanctuary, has welcomed three lion cubs and 10 baby pythons in a single day.
Sepahijala had a 22-year-old lion and, in July last year, the zoo authorities inducted one male and one female lion from Bannerghatta National Park of Karnataka. It was done under an animal exchange program of the Central Zoo Authority.
The lioness has now given birth to triplets on June 9 in the zoo hospital. The cubs and their mother were reported to be fit and healthy. With this addition, the population of lions has gone up to six in the sanctuary.
This has been reported in timesofindia.indiatimes.com dated 12 June 2016.
Sanctuary authorities also found that a python had given birth to 10 snakelets. Usually, pythons hatch after 90 days. However, in this case, they hatched within 45 days and were found to be healthy.
Incidentally, Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary had brought four pairs of animals that included lions, sambars, black bucks and porcupines. These were from Bannerghatta and under the animal exchange program of Central Zoo Authority. Tripura, on its part, had sent Phayre's leaf monkeys, better known as spectacled monkey (one male, two females), three pig-tailed macaques (one male, two females) and two Himalayan bears to Bannerghatta Park.
