This has been reported in timesofindia.indiatimes.com dated 21 January 2016.
Amroha Nagar Palika had advertised for the post of 114 'safai karamchari' (sweepers) and it received 19,000 applications - many of the candidates were BA, BSc, MA, BTechs and MBAs. The officials exect many more applications to come in. But, the state government has ordered the selection process to be put on hold because organizations that represent sweepers have protested. Their demand is that these posts be reserved only for the valmiki community.
The posts do not require any educational qualifications because the work involved is manual labor and the sweepers would have to clean the streets with brooms, and maintain drainage and municipal sewer lines. The salary is Rs 17,000 per month.
