Blizzard Jonas in Washington DC - booze sales soar

Blizzard Jonas in Washington DC leads to roaring sales of booze The Washington DC area is in direct line of Jonas and is expecting to take a direct hit from one of the worst snowstorms ever forecast to hit the nation's capital. The weather system Jonas has shut down the city for the whole weekend. Schools and government offices shuttered and it has prompted an exodus to the suburbs for legions of federal workers.
This has been reported in news.sky.com dated 23 January 2016.
In the opinion of DC Mayor Muriel Bowser, this as a major storm and has implications of life or death. His advice is hunker down, shelter in place, stay off the roads. As if taking a cue, hordes of shoppers flocked to ransack supermarket shelves of bread, milk and toilet paper while several petrol stations in the suburbs were either running low on regular gasoline, or have sold out altogether, because of panic buying. Beer, wine and liquor sales have skyrocketed as householders organize parties. People are buying up whole cases of wine, multiple six-packs of beer, and stocking up to spend days cooped up inside their homes.
Moreover, snow shovels and snow blowers have been also been lapped up from the aisles of hardware stores. As per forecast, the blizzard is threatening to dump as much as 29in of snow and that would surpass the city's deadly 1922 Knickerbocker storm.
The DC Metro, the second-busiest subway in the US, closed down for the entire weekend in its first such stoppage since Hurricane Sandy in 2012. The administration is taking no chances and have dispatched convoys of snow ploughs, salt trucks and gritters to make streets passable. Airlines have also been cancelling flights in and out of the region's three major airports.
However, there is a silver lining for tobogganers - they will be allowed to go sledding this year on Capitol Hill because a recent act of Congress has overturned a ban that had been in place since 1876.
