Astrology is big business in Karnataka TV channels - Chief Minister wants to ban them

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah wants to ban astrology shows on TV manages to ban such shows because these are basically meant to instil fear in the minds of the listeners and do more harm than good - it draws people into the web of superstition. Astrology is a subject that is never old - TV channels regularly air programs where astrologers inform the viewers about what the stars foretell for them and these 'predictions' are lapped up by the young, the old, the educated as well as the uneducated. This has been reported in ibnlive.com dated 11 December 2015.
If the chief minister has his way, the astrologers who tell live astrology and predict the future on television channels in Karnataka will have to shut their shop. It seems while speaking at a function, he had commented that every television channel wants to air astrology-based shows in Karnataka and it is time to ban such shows. Kannada has over one dozen TV news and entertainment channels and all of then have live astrology shows every day. The shows are highly popular and some of the telly astrologers are big celebrities in Karnataka. In fact, one of them was a runner up at Colors Kannada channel's Bigg Boss Season one in 2013. Live astrology shows are one of the main sources of income for TV channels. Incidentally, even the news channels will find it difficult to survive without these shows. Some channels have 3-4 astrologers as fixed guests who get paid in lakhs per month. In short, astrology is a lucrative business in Karnataka.
