NGT wants Adi Ganga banks to be cleared within 3-weeks

The National Green Tribunal NGT has ordered the Calcutta Municipal Corporation to remove "latrines, khatals and piggeries" from the banks of the Adi Ganga within three weeks. The order has been issued by NGT based on an affidavit by the CMC which stated that the Adi Ganga - or the Tolly's Nullah - was "severely polluted" but the existing "latrines, khatals and piggeries" could only be removed from the banks with the approval of the mayor and the mayoral council members.
This has been reported in telegraphindia.com dated 1 December 2015.
NGT had asked for the affidavit because of a public interest litigation filed by an individual Joydeep Mukherjee. The case will again come up for hearing after three weeks.
Environment activist Subhas Datta had placed about 50 photographs of the Adi Ganga and its banks before the tribunal. World Bank-funded CMC project for restoration of the Adi Ganga and rehabilitation of the encroachers was "expected" to begin by September 2016.
