1.7-million children in Ukraine facing a humanitarian crisis – UNICEF report

#ukrainecrisis More than 1.7 million children are facing a humanitarian crisis in the conflict-torn areas of eastern Ukraine and it is an "extremely serious" situation – this warning has come from UNICEF, the U.N. children's agency.
The sufferings of the children have been aggravated by the harsh winter weather because many of the families have been forced out from their homes and do not have proper access to safe water, sanitation and schooling.
The schooling of the children have been disrupted and access to basic services is limited. As per the UNICEF report - 147 schools have been closed in parts of the Donetsk region where fighting is ongoing. Therefore, there is disruption in the education of about 50,000 children since September 1. Some of the schools are in ruins, others are closed because of safety concerns.
In the government-controlled areas, 187 educational institutions in total have been damaged or destroyed. The closures mean that apart from lessons, the children miss out on the stability and routine that can be provided by school at a time of crisis in order to alleviate their stress.
This situation is the result of Government forces and pro-Russia rebels battling for control of eastern Donetsk and Luhansk regions since April, following the annexation of Crimea by Russia.
