The VC has also said that the request cannot be agreed to because of lack of space in the library.
Naima Gulrez, the Principal of the Women’s College has supported the stand taken by the VC. While addressing the audience on the occasion of the oath-taking ceremony of the new students' union, she has clarified that the library is always packed with boys and, if girls also permitted to go in, it could lead to issues of discipline.
Incidentally, the Women's College was established in 1906 and the Maulana Azad Library came up decades later. However, students of the Women's College were never given membership of the library. The library can accommodate 1,300 readers at a time and also has 12 seats reserved for women students of AMU.
Gulfiza Khan, president of the Women's College students' union, has rightly pointed out that a good library was necessary for the all-round development of students and there should be no discrimination between boys and girls. But, her entreaties are falling on deaf ears.
The Maulana Azad Library is believed to be better stocked than the Women's College library but students of the Women's College are not allowed to become members. The problem is not a new one and had been pursued with previous students’ unions but to no avail.
The Maulana Azad Library is located within the campus of AMU and is about 3-Km from the Women's College.
