Parliamentarians can now get a 3-course meal for Rs 90 instead of Rs 61 in canteen

At long last, a decision has been taken by Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan to do way with subsidy in the parliament canteen, an RTI query had briught out the fact that the Parliament canteen facility had received a total subsidy of Rs 60.7 crore during the last five years.
This has been reported in timesofindia.indiatimes.com dated 31 December 2015.
As indicated in a statement from Lok Sabha secretariat, the canteen will henceforth operate on 'no-profit, no-loss' basis from January 1. Therefore, new rates have been announced -
(i) a veg thali which earlier cost Rs 18 will now be sold for Rs 30
(ii) non-veg thali will cost Rs 60 instead of Rs 33 earlier
(iii) a three-course meal will cost Rs 90 instead of Rs 61 earlier
(iv) and chicken curry, which earlier cost Rs 29, will be sold for Rs 40.
The hike in rates is because of controversies from time to time over subsidized food being served in Parliament when there is so much inflation in open market. The decision is based on a report by Parliament's Food Committee, which had been asked to look into the matter of canteen subsidy by the Speaker. This revision has been undertaken after six years and the rates will continue to be reviewed from time to time.
The rate hike will apply to MPs, officials of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, media persons, security personnel apart from visitors.

Effects of global warming - North Pole recorded 20 degrees Celsius above mid-winter norm

Effects of global warming is being felt because North Pole has recorded 20 degrees Celsius above mid-winter norm in Canada. The Canadian weather authorities have laid the blame squarely on temperature spike that has led to the freak depression which has, in turn, brought record Christmas temperatures to North America and lashed Britain with winds and floods.
This has been reported in zeenews.india.com dated 31 December 2015.
The deep low pressure area is looming over Iceland and churning up hurricane force with 75-knot winds and 30-foot waves in the north Atlantic, simultaneously, dragging warm air northwards. This, in the opinion of experts, is a very violent and extremely powerful depression due to which hot temperatures have been pushed so far north. This deep depression has, in fact, pushed hot air as far as the North Pole. As a result, temperatures are at least 20 degrees above normal, at around freezing point, between zero and two degrees.
US scientists from the North Pole Environmental Observatory have observed that the temperatures had climbed suddenly. The polar region is the area that has seen the most profound effects of climate change in recent decades and the current scenario could be that after the North Atlantic, the depression would head towards Siberia which could experience a heatwave of sorts.

Bus operators of Panaji worried about lack of passengers during New Year

Bus operators in Panaji are worried because high fares on interstate routes have seen passengers opt for alternative modes of transport - like flights and own vehicles. Obviously, it is not business as usual for bus operators on December 31.
This has been reported in timesofindia.indiatimes.com dated 31 December 2015.
As an officer on special duty (traffic) has remarked - people are not motivated to travel to Goa on New Year's Eve due to high fares and high cost of accommodation.
The flight fares are invariably high on December 31 as are the hotel charges. Hence, people hesitate to undertake travel unless they have their own vehicles. Obviously, plying buses in such a scenario is not a paying proposition. Tickets to Bangalore were economical, going at a rate of 650 on New Years' eve while KTCL's bus fares for Bangalore to Goa journey was priced at Rs 1,500 during Christmas. The private operators charged in the range of Rs 850 to Rs 900. This trend reveals that traveling to Goa during Christmas is more economical than on New Year's eve.
One private bus operator has indicated that he will not accept bookings from December 31 to Januray 3 because of low occupancy.

Unforgettable words of 2015 – beef, bullet, pulse, intolerance, Maggi

#beef #bullet #intolerance #Maggi #DalRoti As we near the end of 2015, we would like to take stock of a few unforgettable and dirty words of 2015 that have left their imprints on the sands of time – these words have been arranged in no particular order but have been selected at random based on the perception of the author.
Some of these words that will be written forever in golden letters are – beef, bullet, pulse, Maggi, intolerance. Beef – all of a sudden this word came into prominence. The cow is a sacred animal in India and is held in a high pedestal. Side by side, there are some communities who eat beef. It has been going on for ages and, there was a peaceful coexistence. However, all of a sudden, the word ‘beef’ became a dreaded one. Accusing fingers were raised, there were protests and counter protests. It was officially banned in some states but not in others.
Bullet – this word is all about speed. It is a dream coming true – with Japanese help. Once operational, this train will compete with airlines and transport commuters in no time from one place to another. To start with it will be between Ahmedabad and Delhi. It will be an example of efficiency and will put the existing rail system to shame. Coupled with a twin of Kyoto city in India in the form of a renovated Varanasi, the bullet train will edge China out from the scenario.
Pulse – this is what every Indian swears by and when it goes beyond the reach of the common man, there is hue and cry. Dal-roti combination is staple diet of millions of Indians and when suddenly the ingredient does the vanishing trick and becomes available to only a selected few who can afford to pay the price, someone else has to pay a different type of price. They are the political leaders who suffer loss of face and credibility.
Intolerance – this is a word that has seen heroes become villains. Bollywood was shaken to its roots and those who had entertained millions of Indians for so many years suddenly became untouchables and fund themselves outcast. They were asked to leave the country. The message that went out to the world at large was not a pleasant one. But, then, we are able to tolerate the intolerable - that is the paradox.
Maggi – this was a popular brand on instant noodle manufactured by one of the most renowned manufacturer. Celebs who used to endorse the brand were caught on the wrong foot because, all of a sudden, there were rumors that the instant noodles contained ingredients that were in quantities that were not within prescribed limits. Samples were sent for testing to labs and the results were not favorable. Immediately, orders were given to withdraw the brand from all outlets. And – they had to be destroyed. The best part is that, subsequent tests in other labs, removed the stigma and the brand is back!

Desperate to woo industries, West Bengal launches a flight from Cooch Behar

West Bengal is desperate to woo industries and, before the annual Bengal Global Business Summit, the state has launched a flight from Cooch Behar - it is an effort to link far-flung destinations. A 9-seater fixed-wing aircraft would operate four days a week on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
It would link Durgapur, Calcutta, Bagdogra and Cooch Behar over a three-and-a-half-hour journey and the fare would be Rs 5,500 (minus taxes). The flights would be on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
This has been reported in telegraphindia.com dated 30 December 2015.
Aviation industry insiders are of the opinion that for any company that wants to run flights along the proposed route, it would cost around Rs 1.6 crore for flying 16 days a month. However, it is said that the cost would be Rs 58 lakhs - and, there is confusion.
The flights would be operated by Bengal Aerotropolis Projects Limited (BAPL) who have developed the airport in Andal - and, thy have selected Spirit Air Private Limited for running the flights to Cooch Behar after inviting tenders. Obviously, the state would have to subsidize it.
Incidentally, in November 2011, a flight had started from Cooch Behar but it was withdrawn within a few months of the start because of lack of passengers on the route. The lack of industry told on the service.

NASA developing hopping drones to explore Martian caves for human settlement

#NASA #Mars #humansettlement Mars is beckoning humans and, while preparations are on by different agencies to send humans to the Red Planet Mars, NASA has gone one step ahead and is developing hopping drones - they will be programmed to go into caves on Mars and try to zero in on probable locations where humans can have their settlements.
This has been reported in dailymail.co.uk dated 30 December 2015.
The drones will be capable to hop into caves and along 'lava tunnels' beneath the surface of Mars which will be used to find the first human home on the red planet.
NASA has awarded funding to scientists and engineers who have been asked to develop a robotic scout that will be able to make short flights above the Martian surface before descending into caves. NASA hopes that it may be possible for astronauts to shelter in the subterranean world that exists within a networks of lava tubes on Mars. That will protect them from harmful radiation.
And - in order to carry out this exercise and explore these tunnels, which had been formed billions of years ago, the team of researchers are developing an autonomous drone that can pick its way through the darkness. In other words, it will hop from location to location by using a combination of a spring and gas powered thrusters.
These drones would need to be able to navigate itself through the pitch black, rocky environment after first lowering down up to 1,000ft through one of the many 'skylights' that have been noticed on the surface of Mars.
Work on developing such drones have started by engineers at private space company Astrobotic Technology and researchers at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Use online honey trappers to test the fidelity of the spouse

#honeytrapper Online honey trapper is a new profession that is gradually spreading its net as suspicious clients are paying men and women to flirt on social media with their partners to test if they are faithful. Their purpose is to seduce the other party by using every conceivable method and see if the target can be influenced to become unfaithful.
This has been reported in news.sky.com dated 30 December 2015.
How they operate is really simple. In order to flirt online, they create a fake ID on a social networking site and strike up a conversation. They goads the other party to talk about the family and, even send across intimate pictures and invitation. The objective is to tempt the other party to cheat.
They earn good money and remain unknown!
Their tribe is growing because, taking advantage of the growth of social media, investigative businesses are now offering such internet based services to suspicious partners. The trappers - some are called "investigators", others are called "honeys" - are paid to test the fidelity of a target. Some companies train new recruits to target both men and women online. One of the well-established houses has 42 investigators on its books.

This New Year, TTD will not give VIP passes for darshan of Tirupati Balaji

It is a tradition for Indians to always look for shortcuts, even when going to have a darshan of Lord Venkateswara at Tirupati and, in order to avoid chaos, the administration of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) has taken a decision to ban VIP passes for the darshan on New Year Day. In view of the huge rush of devotees on that day, the administration of the famous hill shrine of Lord Venkateswara has decided not to entertain requests from VIPs.
This has been reported in ibnlive.com dated 30 December 2015.
TTD manages the cash-rich temple and, this is the first time it has taken such a bold decision of not entertaining all kinds of recommendation letters issued by VIPs for darshan and other facilities. They issue such requests to their near and dear ones who come to visit the hills on January 1.
However, only protocol VIPs would be given priority in getting accommodation and special entry tickets for darshan on payment. Moreover, as part of the arrangements to manage the crowd, the temple management has cancelled all daily rituals, including 'Kalyanotsavam' (celestial wedding) on January 1.
In order to ensure thast all devotees get a chance to have a darshan of Lord Balaji, they would be allowed into the temple uninterruptedly from dawn to beyond midnight on the New Year day. A thick security blanket would be thrown in and around Tirumala hills including the 10-Km long stairway that leads to the shrine.

Cleanliness drive by Railways - collects Rs 58 lakhs in fine from Delhi Railway station

Indian Railways has launched a cleanliness drive and, as a result of that, the New Delhi station has collected Rs 58 lakhs in fine from people who were caught littering the station or committing nuisance like urinating on the walls.
This has been reported in m.dailyhunt.in/news dated 29 December 2015.
This is due to the zealous drive of the Indian Railways to curtail littering at the railway stations across the country. In order to check this, the authorities have been imposing hefty fine and penalty on those who leave behind waste either on platform or tracks.
The collection in Delhi alone was about Rs 58 lakh as penalty. The Delhi division of Northern Railway collected this amount in fines for littering at 5 major stations - Delhi Main, New Delhi, Hazrat Nizamuddin, Anand Vihar and Ghaziabad. Those found spitting or urinating in public also face the heat with fines ranging from between Rs 200-500. Earlier, in June this year, Northern Railways had collected Rs 2.3 lakh as fines at New Delhi railway station.
Moreover, 50 people were prosecuted for not paying fines and were put before a magistrate, where they eventually paid the penalty.
RPF personnel are assisting the railway staff in imposing penalty on delinquent people.

Outcome of Modi's visit - Amul gets an export market for its products in Russia

One of the gains of Modi's visit to Russia is that Amul is getting an export market for its products in Russia. Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) markets brand Amul and it is moving closer to export its dairy products to Russia - this will make it the first Indian dairy major to enter that market.
This has been reported in timesofindia.indiatimes.com dated 29 December 2015.
A top official of GCMMF was in the Indian delegation that accompanied Modi during the visit and, Amul is hopeful that Russia's Rosselkhoznadzor (also known as Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance or FSVPS) - will soon allow imports of dairy products from India by removing 1,000 cows' farm condition.
Russia had evaluated India as their supplier last year, after visits to few Indian dairy plants in November 2014 during which time FSVPS had suggested that only those Indian dairy plants which own more than 1,000 cows shall be approved for export of dairy products to Russia.
This had been objected to by Amul since it was an impractical non-tariff barrier since such a criteria had not been imposed by Russia on any other country from where it imports milk products. Moreover, majority of Indian farmers usually possess 2 to 5 milch animals and there are not more than 2 to 3 farms across the country that have more than 1,000 cows as asked by Russian protocol.
That condition appears to have been removed after the visit of Prime Minister Modi.
Incidentally, while all co-operatives put together currently have an inventory of 50,000 MT milk powder, Amul alone procures 205 lakh litres milk every day.

Noalen gur all the year round, thanks to essence from Chennai

Bengalis love sweets and, in winter, it is all abut sweets where the main ingredient is nolen gur - sweets like nolen gur sandesh and rosogolla. However, since the suppliers are unable to produce enough quantities of gur because of various reasons, many sweet manufacturers depend on a product from Chennai that imparts the color and essence of nolen gur.
This has been reported in telegraphindia.com dated 29 December 2015.
Sweet shops have been using this artificial agent for the past three years because nolen gur suppliers in South 24-Parganas and Nadia are struggling to come up with quality produce.
This product is identified as S 4167. It is expensive but, one millilitre is enough for a kilogram of cottage cheese. It comes in glass bottles that list propylene glycol, flavouring agents, sugar and water as its ingredients. incidentally, propylene glycol is used in coffee-based drinks, liquid sweeteners, ice cream, dairy products and medicines.
The problems faced by local suppliers to produce it locally is basically the surrounding temperature - the colder it is, the better the sap of the date palms. After a tree is cut there is usually a waiting period of at least three days. This year, the cloud cover has come in the way and the required temperature was not there.
As indicated by sap collectors, the temperature needs to be between 12 to 14 degrees Celsius over several days for good quality sap to be collected. Against his, before this weekend, the mercury had dropped below 14 degrees Celsius only once this season. Moreover the age of the date palm tree, its height and thickness of its fibers also affect the quality of the sap.

Dabbawallahs of Mumbai create Roti Bank for the poor with leftover foods

#Mumbai #dabbawallah The dabbawalahs are unique to the city of Mumbai - they collect lunch boxes from the houses and delver them to the correct person without fail. Their customer base must run into millions. They are the lifeline of Mumbai and they have now embarked on the noble mission of creating a Roti Bank for the poor. There are around 400 dabbawalas who have taken the initiative. They want to prevent criminal wastage of food at social functions like weddings. They all collect the left over food and deliver it to the poor of the city.
This has been reported in timesofindia.indiatimes.com dated 29 December 2015.
These dabbawalas have tied up with 30 major wedding planners and caterers who will call on two helpline numbers and schedule a 'pick-up'. In any program there is always some extra food because the number of guests will always vary and provision must be kept for eventualities. Therefore, excess will always be there and, instead of wasting it, it will be handed over to the dabbawallahs.
They have given two mobile numbers and, if there is excess food even after a house party, the dabbawalas nearest to the location will collect it and distribute it among pavement dwellers, slum residents and anyone living below the breadline.
Experience has shown that large quantities of unconsumed food from weddings, parties and other social events in Mumbai ends up in the garbage bin. For the past few years, some activists, venues and private citizens have been trying to prevent the wastage by giving it to the poor and the dabbawallahs would be doing a great social service by their initiative.

Delhi boasts of women only liquor mall in Mayur Vihar

Delhi can now lay claim to be a city that caters to its women who love liquor - usually, women generally hate to enter liquor shops frequented by men because of obvious reasons. Therefore, liquor shops meant exclusively for women in Mayur Vihar would go a long way to meet their needs. One location is Star City Mall in East Delhi, right next to DLF The Galleria. It is a liquor store that stands out from its competitors.
This has been reported in indianexpress.com dated 29 December 2015.
There are glass walls, fancy interiors and apart from a comfortable-looking sofa, there is a large pink strip on the outside that reads “Exclusive section only for ladies”. There are at least a dozen of these spread over these two malls in Mayur Vihar.
The Star City mall, next to Pizza Hut, has opened in October this year, and it is gradually getting noticed by women who want to buy alcohol without being harassed or intimidated or be stared at by men. Although men are not allowed in the women’s-only section, they can go to an adjoining section of the same shop, which is open for all.
Of course, even though marketed as women-only, couples make up the bulk of its customer base. Many people do not know about the concept. There is a distinct women-friendly image with female security guards. Women who come here for vodka, wine and champagne. Some go in for whiskey as well and, if accompanied by male companions, they buy beer. But the choice of girls is generally tequila.

Kolkattans have switched loyalties - they fly out during Christmas instead of Pujas

Kolkattans have switched loyalties. Instead of vacationing abroad during the Pujas, they are opting for Christmas which has taken over from the Pujas as the biggest holiday season of the year. This observation is based on the flight bookings in the run-up to New Year.
This has been reported in telegraphindia.com dated 28 December 2015.
While the Pujas is supposed to be a traditional tourist season, the general response over the past couple of years have been damp. Instead, the winter holiday season has taken the place of the Pujas. Previously, most of the outbound flights on all sectors had many empty seats in December - that has changed.
Right now, most international flights out of Calcutta have no seats left till December 30, including business class. Industry insiders have attributed this rush during the Christmas-New Year season to longer school holidays apart from a prolonged spell of political peace in Thailand which is a much sought-after holiday destination.
A Thai Airways flight has 39 business class and 254 economy class seats and, till December 30, there are no seats in both classes on Bangkok-bound flights.
In response to the rush, Qatar Airways is believed to be flying a bigger aircraft with 110 additional seats on the Calcutta-Doha route.
Incidentally, the Kolkata market continues to rely on seasonal and leisure traffic on international routes and round-the-year demand for premium seats still eludes the market.

Storm robs Christmas cheer for US South, Southwest and Midwest - 43 reported killed

There is no Christmas cheer for people of the US South, Southwest and Midwest because of storms that have been raging in the region. The storm has unleashed floods and tornadoes in which at least 43 persons have been killed. The storm has also flattened buildings and snarled transportation for millions during a busy travel time.

Powerful tornadoes usually occur during spring and summer in central states but frequency is less in winter, according to U.S. weather data. In view of the bad weather or threat of it, the governors of Missouri and New Mexico has declared a state of emergency for their states.
Flash floods have killed at least 13 people in Missouri and Illinois. Governor Jay Nixon has revealed that in Missouri, emergency workers have evacuated residents from their homes and conducted dozens of water rescues. At least eight people had been killed and numerous roadways had been closed.
In Texas, at least 11 people were killed in the Dallas area over the weekend by tornadoes, including one packing winds of up to 322 km per hour. The twister hit the city of Garland, and left eight dead while blowing vehicles off highways. Another three deaths were reported in the Dallas metropolitan area which is the United States` fourth most populous with about 7 million residents. Scores of people were injured in the region and more than 100 homes were damaged or destroyed, officials said.
The storms have come on the heels of tornadoes that hit two days before Christmas - in this, at least 18 people were killed, including 10 in Mississippi.
The bad weather has forced the cancellation of more than 1,100 flights in the nation on Sunday. Nearly half of the canceled flights were in Dallas which is a major US flight hub.

Mechanised trawlers mow down thousands of Olive Ridley turtles in Srikakulam

Thousands of Olive Ridley turtles have been mowed down by mechanized trawlers and the carcasses have washed ashore from Ranasthalam to Ichapuram in Srikakulam district. The fishermen have revealed that they have seen innumerable carcasses in neighboring seashore villages of Gunupalli, Akkupalli, Dokulapadu, Manchineellapeta and Devunaltada in Vajrapu Kothuru mandal in the district in the last two days.
This has been reported in timesofindia.indiatimes.com dated 28 December 2015.
It is suspected that the turtles, some weighing nearly 50-Kgs have probably been killed after they were accidentally trapped by trawlers. This is their breeding season and they come to the shore to lay eggs. In the process, many of them get trapped in the nets of mechanized boats.
Palasa, Baruva and Vajrapu Kotturu in Srikakulam district and RK Beach, Bheemili and Sagarnagar in Visakhapatnam district are the nesting spots of the turtles in north coastal Andhra and, one can come across about 1,000 nesting spots between January and March in the region.

People of Kashmir cultivate water chestnuts during winter

People of Kashmir cultivate water chestnuts during winter in the Wular Lake - a harvest could reach a total of nearly 5 million kilograms in the year. One kilogram of raw water chestnuts sells for about 15 rupees, or about 23 U.S. cents. These spiky, triangular shaped water chestnuts have long been a major crop for the people who live near Wular. This is one of Asia's largest freshwater bodies and the largest of the lakes in India-controlled Kashmir.
This has been reported in foxnews.com dated 24 December 2015.
The marble-sized fruit must be shelled and taken out of their dark brown casings and then dried in the sun until they are crispy and white. They are then shifted to the market. It is a popular item for Kashmiris who eat them raw, roasted or fried during the harsh, snowy winter.
Moreover, they can also be ground into a flour for use by diabetic patients, because it is free of both cholesterol and fat. It is also a food taken by fasting Hindus on days when they are forbidden from eating cereals and pulses. The shells are used as cooking fuel. Already, some researchers are even investigating whether the fruit has cancer-fighting properties.
Water chestnuts are usually ready for harvest from November through February and, at times, entire families work on retrieval of the items. The men thrash the water with boat paddles to separate floating chestnut leaves from other foliage and debris clogging the marshy water. Many families spend weeks together, camping on their boats in the lake, and pick the water chestnuts till their hulls are filled.

Wild fire destroys 1500-acres in Solimar Beach - major California highway closed

A major wild fire on Christmas Day has destroyed nearly 1,500 acres in the Solimar Beach area of Ventura County and, as a result, officials in Southern California have closed parts of a major highway as crews battle the fast-spreading wildfire. The fire had started late on Friday and quickly spread due to high winds and dry vegetation as indicated by a county fire department spokeswoman.
This has been reported in news.sky.com dated 27 December 2015.
Teams of more than 600 firefighters were either at the scene or were en route to help battle the blaze that is located about 105-Km northwest of Los Angeles. A mandatory evacuation order has been put in place for the Solimar Beach community, while it was a voluntary evacuation order for the nearby Faria Beach community.
There is no news of any injuries or damage to structures but the fire has not yet been contained. Images from the area showed flames being whipped into the sky by high winds as the fire burned surrounding hills and up against the 101. Accordingly, along with portions of the heavily-traveled highway, nearby Union Pacific rail lines were also kept closed. Reopening the highway is a top priority for the officials.

Air India to stop non-veg meals in domestic flights of 61 to 90 minutes

Air India has taken a decision to stop serving non-veg meals in domestic flights of 61 to 90 minutes duration. This will be effective from 2016 New Year's Day, the airline would serve only vegetarian food on its short range domestic flights.
This has been reported in timesofindia.indiatimes.com dated 26 December 2015.
This decision has been conveyed to its staff through a circular, dated December 23 and signed by Captain D X Pais, general manager of Air India. It is addressed to the cabin crew and it indicates that only Indian vegetarian hot meals will be provided in economy class on domestic sector of flights with duration between 61 and 90 minutes, from January 1, 2016.
The reason is that the flights with 61-90 minutes duration give them a window of 30-40 minutes to serve passengers. Explaining this, the argument put forward is that during take-off and touch down, there is no scope for any service as the galley equipment has to remain fastened. In the balance time available for service, it is impossible to juggle passenger choices of meals - while a non-vegetarian can have a vegetarian meal, it is not same the other way round. However, the issue is not so simple and the national carrier's move has invariably raised many an eyebrow.
Moreover, tea and coffee would not be there on flights that fly during lunch and dinner time.
The new pruned menu for flights of less than 60 minutes will not have any hot meals but, only vegetarian refreshments.

Tourists discard Tunisia, Egypt and Turkey and embrace Mexico, the Dominican Republic and Sri Lanka

Terrorism has scared tourists away from traditional destinations like Tunisia, Egypt and Turkey and are, instead being offered alternate spots in Mexico, the Dominican Republic and Sri Lanka by tour operators. Some holiday giants are offering savings of more than £800 on sunshine breaks in a fierce new price war.
This has been reported in dailymail.co.uk dated 25 December 2015.
The post-Christmas period is crucial for sales and big name firms including Thomson and Thomas Cook are vying for early bookings because tourism has suffered due to attacks and British families are not keen to go to Tunisia, Egypt and Turkey following the terror attacks. Tour operators are, therefore, pushing alternative long-haul destinations like Mexico, the Dominican Republic and Sri Lanka.
Apart from money-off deals, Thomson and sister brand First Choice are offering thousands of free child places and low-deposit bookings. An example is their ‘Sunshine Super Saver’ - this includes savings of £860 per couple for a Thomson Sensatori holiday to Mexico. A 14 nights at a five-star resort next May in Mexico would come to £2,934.
The lowest-priced destination outside of Europe is the Florida theme-park capital of Orlando - there, a week’s holiday including meals is just £692 per person.

There are 5000 tigers kept as pets in the US but, many are mistreated

There are more than 5,000 tigers are kept as pets in the US, as against only 3,200 remaining free in the wild globally but, the animals kept as pets are mistreated. Hence, activists are calling for imposing restrictions on who can own these exotic animals and who cannot.
This has been reported in news.sky.com dated 26 December 2015.
It is simple to own a tiger as a pet in the US - Americans can get permission to keep them by giving a name, address and a $40 fee. This is usually the procedure and it allows the owners to legally keep a big cat in most US states.
However, when the animal becomes big enough, they become too difficult to handle and many of them fall victim to abuse. Some of them are bred for profit and starved while being kept in cages that are too small.
Other forms of exploitation are - to breed cute and profitable tiger cubs. In a petting zoo one can pay $200 to swim with a cub and ten people a day means a pretty decent income. The US Department of Agriculture has filed a complaint against the Dade City Wild Things petting zoo accusing it of mishandling the animals.
It may be recalled that in 2011, an animal owner in Ohio released his collection of over 50 exotic animals, including lions and tigers, before killing himself. In the ensuing chaos, the police had to shoot and kill most of the big cats . It prompted state legislation that put strict regulations on owners and banned future ownership of exotic animals.
